Foursquare offers users a fun way to explore their local area. The application works through a cell phone download. Users add the application to their phones then take it with them as they go out and do things. The user can check in when they arrive at a destination, such as a shop, restaurant, bar or other venue. Four Square will provide the business listing using GPS to determine where the user is. If the cell phone does not have internet access, the user can check in via text message. Users can also share a tip about the location or a rating to encourage or discourage others from checking it out as well. Users earn badges and points for frequenting local establishments. If the user visits enough, they will earn Mayor status at that location and may be awarded with discounts from the business. Some businesses also supply discounts to all Foursquare users, so there is also a way to save money while exploring with Four Square.Show more screenshots »
Foursquare was founded by Naveen Selvadurai and Dennis Crowley in March of 2009. The application has been very successful, exceeding three million users in August of 2010. In 2011, it signed a contract with the Canadian Yellow Pages Group in order to improve its accuracy for business locations in its databases. In June same year, Foursquare raised $50 million, bringing its total funding to $71,4 million. Based in New York City, the Four Square team includes Chief Product Officer Alex Rainert, Engineer Mike Singleton, Director Albert Wenger, Vice President of Business Development Tristan Walker, and Director of Client Services Eric Friedman. On March 4th 2012, co-founder Naveen Selvadurai announced that he is leaving the FourSquare team.
Foursquare entices users in a number of ways. First, it makes going out and exploring a local area fun by giving users a way to earn badges, points and discounts as well as a sense of social networking with other users. It is also enticing because it’s easy to use and can go anywhere using a mobile phone. Users can gather insight into local businesses before they go through comments left by other Foursquare users who have been there before.
The Foursquare website has a fun, lighthearted appeal that really speaks volumes for what the application does. Users are greeted by light green and blue colors along with stylish cartoon images. A professionally made video helps explain to users what Foursquare is and how they can benefit from using it. A recent activity feed also helps showcase users as they provide updates to Foursquare. The application is also easy to use, utilizing GPS information and allowing users to quickly add businesses listings and comments while they are out and about.
New users can sign up for Foursquare by clicking the large green “Join Now” button found on the homepage. A button at the top of the form gives users the option of signing in using an existing Facebook account. Otherwise, the user can fill out a traditional registration form that asks for a first and last name, password, email address, phone number, location, gender, date of birth, and optional photo. After filling out the information, the user can add friends from Facebook and Twitter or invite friends to join Foursquare. This step can be skipped as well.
Anyone can create a Foursquare account and begin using the fun features for free. There are no subscription fees or additional fees for doing so. Users can invite others or find Foursquare on the Android Marketplace for Android phones (which is also a free download). Users can choose to spend money when they receive discounts for local businesses from Foursquare, but this is completely optional.
Anyone who enjoys exploring or who wants to share their knowledge of an area can really get into Foursquare. The application makes it fun to see where friends have been and share little known information about out of the way places.
